The Book of 2 John Summary by Chapter

Chapter 1 – Walking in Truth and Love; Warning Against Deceivers

John addresses the letter to the elect lady and her children, which may symbolize a local church or may be literal. He expresses joy in finding some of her children walking in the truth and emphasizes the commandment to love one another. This love, John writes, means walking according to God’s commandments.

He also warns against deceivers and antichrists who deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. He exhorts the recipients of the letter to watch themselves so that they do not lose what they have worked for, but may instead receive a full reward. John advises not to welcome or support anyone who does not bring the teaching of Christ.

Though brief, this letter from the Apostle John is a stirring reminder of the eternal bond between love and truth. Let us ardently walk in the light of God’s commandments, keeping our hearts anchored in love. Moreover, may we be vigilant, discerning, and steadfast, not being led astray by deceitful teachings.

A Heartfelt Note to a Dear Friend

Hey there, my dear friend and her amazing family! It’s John. I can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled I am to see that you guys are rockstars at sticking to the real deal – you know, living out the truth we learned from God. That’s what binds us together!

Now, let’s talk about something that’s really, really close to my heart: love. It’s not new – we’ve heard it since day one. But, man, it’s so essential. Being loving is like wearing your favorite, comfiest pair of sneakers – you gotta keep them on wherever you go. This love thing means staying on the path God set out for us. And trust me, that’s the best route to take.

But listen up; this is super important. There are some shady characters out there. You know, the kind who would sell you magic beans. They’re talking nonsense about Jesus and trying to trip people up. Don’t let them mess with your heads! Keep your eyes peeled and don’t let all the hard work you’ve put in go down the drain. You want to hit the jackpot, right?

And one more thing – if someone swings by and starts blabbing stuff that doesn’t match what we know about Jesus, don’t give them the time of day. Don’t invite them over for coffee or give them a high five. Nuh-uh. You don’t need that kind of drama.

Okay, that’s all I wanted to drop in and say. I’d rather talk face-to-face, but this note will have to do for now. Sending big hugs to all of you!

Take care,

John

The Text – 2 John (KJV)

Here is the full text of 2 John in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible:

1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2 For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

This isn’t a long letter, but it’s one that’s filled with wisdom and warnings to guide us. So, my friends, let’s stick to the path of love and truth, keeping our journey secure from those who might lead us astray.
