Chapter 1 – Confirming One’s Calling and Election
In chapter one, Peter opens the letter by encouraging the believers to grow in the knowledge of God. He urges them to make every effort to add to their faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love.
He assures them that if they possess these qualities, they will be effective and productive in their knowledge of Jesus Christ. Peter also affirms the authenticity of the message he and other apostles have proclaimed, reminding them that they were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ majesty.
Chapter 2 – False Teachers and Their Destruction
Peter warns the believers about false teachers who will secretly introduce destructive heresies. He points out that these false teachers, driven by greed, will exploit people with fabricated stories.
He gives examples from history, including the fallen angels and the ancient world of Noah’s time, to illustrate that God does not spare the wicked but rescues the righteous. Peter describes the depravity and ultimate doom of these false teachers.
Chapter 3 – The Day of the Lord Will Come
In the last chapter, Peter addresses the scoffers who mock the promise of Jesus’ return. He reminds the believers that with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
He assures them that the Day of the Lord will come unexpectedly and exhorts them to live holy and godly lives as they look forward to this day. Peter concludes the letter by encouraging them to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
