“And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.”
Reflection
Have you ever known you needed to let something go, yet found yourself holding on anyway? You knew the friendship was pulling you in the wrong direction. You knew the habit was becoming a snare. You knew you needed to walk away, yet when the moment came, your heart hesitated. Sometimes we become so accustomed to something we were never meant to keep that, when God says, “Leave,” our hearts resist the very freedom He is offering.
Lot had been told to leave Sodom, but when the time came to go, “he lingered.”
Sodom was not simply a place Lot visited. He had built a life there. He had relationships, possessions, routines, and memories there. Leaving meant walking away from something that had become familiar.
And this can happen to us too.
Sometimes what we struggle to leave is not something we openly call evil. It may be a friendship we know is weakening our walk with God. A relationship we know we should release. A habit we have practiced for so long that it feels almost natural. A private compromise we keep excusing. A place, entertainment, conversation, ambition, or pattern of living that has become so familiar that obedience feels painful.
We know. We feel the conviction and even tell ourselves that we will change.
Yet we linger.
But look at the mercy of God toward Lot. “The LORD being merciful unto him,” the angels took hold of his hand and brought him outside the city.
What mercy!
Lot’s hesitation did not make God’s mercy disappear. God did not leave him to perish simply because he struggled to let go.
Then came the command: “Escape for thy life” (Genesis 19:17). God was not merely asking Lot to leave a location. He was calling him away from destruction. Sometimes what feels like God taking something from us is actually God rescuing us from something we have become too accustomed to recognize as dangerous.
Perhaps you have been lingering. Perhaps you know exactly what God has been dealing with you about, but your heart keeps finding reasons to stay.
There is a truth here that should take us to the place of prayer: God is merciful. Lot lingered, but God did not leave him there. “The LORD being merciful unto him,” He took Lot by the hand and brought him out.
Walking away from a bondage, a habit, a relationship, or anything else God is calling you to leave may be difficult. But when you find that you cannot seem to let go, you can ask God to help you. The One who took Lot by the hand can take hold of you too.
Scripture tells us, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Whatever you are struggling to leave, bring it honestly before God. Tell Him how difficult it is. Ask Him for mercy. Ask Him for grace. Ask Him to take your hand and lead you out.
You do not have to overcome the struggle before you come to Him. Come to Him with the struggle.
Today’s Challenge
Return to Genesis 19:12-25 and read it slowly again. Pay particular attention to the words “he lingered” and “the LORD being merciful unto him.” Sit with those words until they search your own heart, and ask God honestly: “Lord, where am I lingering, and what have I become so accustomed to that I am struggling to leave?”
Prayer Point
Lord, please take my hand and lead me out of everything You are calling me to leave; where my heart still clings to what You are calling me from, give me grace to let go, and help me trust You enough to follow.
