What Is the Current State of Your Faith

“Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.” Matthew 9:29, KJV

REFLECTION

I want you to observe, dear friend, that our Lord did not say, “According to My willingness be it unto you,” for His willingness was never in question.

He did not say, “According to My power be it unto you,” for His power admits no limitation.

He did not say, “According to your own worthiness,” for on that basis, not one soul would receive so much as a crumb from His table.

God is not reluctant. God is not unstable. God is not weak.

God is constant.

Faith is the variable, and this does not mean God is a machine moved by human effort. It means unbelief must not be allowed to sit on the throne of your heart. It means doubt must not be given a louder voice than the Word of Christ.

“According to your faith,” mark that word, “according.” It is a word of measure. It is a word of proportion. It tells us that faith is not only something we either have or do not have, as though a candle were either lit or unlit.

Faith can grow.

Faith can weaken.

Faith can be strengthened.

Faith can be fed.

The question this text places before you this morning is simple:

What is the current state of your faith?

  • Is it strong? Then expect great things from God, for great things are not too hard for Him.
  • Is it weak? Then feed it, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
  • Is it weary? Then bring it honestly before the Lord. He does not despise bruised reeds or smoking flax.
  • Is it frayed? Then return to the Word, return to prayer, return to obedience, and let the God who restores the years the locust has eaten restore also the threads the enemy has cut.
  • Is it broken? Then come.

Come as the prodigal came.

Come as Thomas came.

Come as blind Bartimaeus came, crying out from the roadside with nothing to commend him but his desperate need and his stubborn cry.

For the promise still stands.

The rule still holds.

The word of the Son of God has not been revoked.

According to your faith, be it unto you.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I thank You for these words this morning.

Have mercy on me for every way I have allowed doubt to speak louder than Your Word and for every time I have allowed the size of my problems to eclipse the measure of Your power.

Restore me, Lord. Strengthen what is weak. Heal what is wounded. Feed what is hungry. Awaken what has grown dull. Increase my faith today.

Let my heart believe You again, not according to my fear, not according to my feelings, not according to my past disappointments, but according to Your living Word.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Read Matthew 9:27–34 and James 1:5–8.

Then ask yourself honestly:

What has been speaking louder in my heart lately, my faith or my fear?
