“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

Reflection

September is new territory for us. We have never lived this particular month before, and we do not know everything it will bring. There may be opportunities we have been praying for, unexpected changes, difficult decisions, joyful surprises, or moments we could never have anticipated.

Yet there is something comforting about not knowing everything: you do not have to know everything.

We naturally make plans because we want some sense of control over the future. We set goals, organize our schedules, make financial decisions, pursue opportunities, and think about what we want the coming weeks to look like. There is nothing wrong with planning. In fact, Proverbs 16:9 acknowledges that “a man’s heart deviseth his way.”

The problem begins when our plans become demands we place on God.

We can make a plan and then become anxious when circumstances begin moving in another direction. We can become disappointed because an opportunity closed, a relationship changed, a prayer seemed unanswered, or something did not happen according to our expectations. But Proverbs reminds us that while we may devise our way, the LORD directs our steps.

That means God’s direction may sometimes confirm our plans, but it may also redirect them.

An unexpected turn does not mean your life has fallen outside God’s knowledge or care. Sometimes the path God chooses for us becomes clear only after we have taken the next step in faith.

You cannot see everything September will contain. God can. God is not surprised by what you will encounter. You cannot control every outcome. But you can place your plans in the hands of the One who sees farther than you do.

So enter this month with plans, but hold them with open hands.

Make your plans. Work diligently. Pray boldly. Pursue what is right. But leave room for God to redirect you. Do not merely ask Him to bless the path you have chosen; ask Him to direct your steps.

You may not know what September holds, but you know the God who will be with you through it.

And that is enough.

Today’s Challenge

Read Proverbs 3:5-6 again and again until you have felt the weight of the verses.

Then ask yourself whether you are truly going to trust God or lean on your own understanding in this new month.

Prayer

Lord, as I enter September, help me to make my plans wisely, surrender my expectations completely, and trust You to direct every step I take.
