Thanksgiving should not be something we offer only after God has done something great. In John 6:11, we see Jesus giving thanks before the miracle was visible.
“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.”
John 6:11, KJV
The crowd was hungry. The food was little. The need was greater than human ability. Yet Jesus did not complain about what was lacking. He took the available loaves and gave thanks.
That is powerful. Jesus gave thanks while the provision still looked insufficient.
Many times, when what we have seems too small for what we face, our hearts can easily turn to murmuring, bitterness, or fear. But Jesus shows us a better way. He teaches us to give thanks, not only after the answer comes, but even while the need is still before us.
A believer who understands God does not wait until everything looks perfect before giving thanks. He gives thanks because God is faithful.
Scripture says:
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV
So ask yourself: do I only thank God when things are good, or do I give Him thanks in everything?
Make a resolution today to give thanks continually. Give thanks in everything, not necessarily for everything, because God is still faithful, present, and able to provide.
Reflection Questions
- Do I only thank God after I see the answer?
What small provision have I been overlooking?
How can I practice thanksgiving today?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have complained instead of giving thanks. Teach me to trust You even when what I have looks small. Help me to give thanks in everything, because You are faithful and able to provide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
