Acts 16:22–34

KEY VERSE

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”

Acts 16:25, KJV

REFLECTION

The woman was gasping for breath.

During ward rounds, she lay on the bed with an oxygen mask over her face, relying on supplemental oxygen to help her breathe. Then her caregiver was asked, “How much does the oxygen cost per day?”

I went home thinking about that question.

Something most of us barely notice had become something she desperately needed. It made me realise how easily we overlook ordinary mercies simply because we have become used to them.

We often notice what is missing more than what is present. We count the prayers that have not been answered, the things we have not received, and the situations that have not changed. Then gratitude begins to feel difficult.

But Acts 16 gives us a picture of gratitude that is difficult to ignore.

Paul and Silas had been beaten with many stripes and thrown into the inner prison. Their feet were fastened in stocks. They had every reason to focus on what had gone wrong.

Yet at midnight, they “prayed, and sang praises unto God.”

Notice when they praised Him.

Not after the prison doors opened or after their wounds were healed. Not because they knew an earthquake was coming.

They praised while nothing had changed.

That is gratitude at another level.

Gratitude is not dependent on getting what we want only. It is recognising what is still worthy of thanks even when life has not gone the way we hoped.

Paul and Silas had plenty they could complain about. But they chose to praise God. And Luke tells us, “the prisoners heard them.” Their gratitude could be heard by others.

We often say, “I have nothing to be grateful for,” when what we really mean is, “I have not received what I wanted.”

Those are not the same thing.

You may still be waiting for an answer. But there are mercies already in your life that deserve your attention and your thanks. You woke up. You have people to love. You have food, strength for today, access to God’s Word, and the privilege of prayer. Most importantly, God has not ceased to be worthy because a day did not give you what you wanted.

Perhaps gratitude begins by noticing again.

What have you stopped thanking God for simply because you have become used to having it?

Paul and Silas did not know what would happen next. They simply chose to praise God with what they had, where they were, before anything changed.

Look again. Notice again. Give thanks again.

PRAYER

Lord, open my eyes to the blessings I have become too familiar with to notice. Forgive me for focusing so much on what I lack that I overlook what You have already given me. Teach me to recognise Your goodness and give You thanks, even before anything changes. Amen.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Read Acts 16:22–34 slowly again. Notice the details in verses 22–25: what happened to Paul and Silas, where they were placed, what was fastened on them, when they prayed, and when they praised. Then ask yourself: what had changed when they began to praise God? Sit with their answer, not with what happened later, but with their response before anything changed. What would gratitude look like in your own life if you followed their example?

KEY TAKEAWAY

Gratitude begins when we stop measuring God’s goodness only by what we are still waiting to receive.
