REFLECTION
Naaman had scarcely disappeared from sight when Gehazi began to run after him. His master had refused the Syrian’s gifts, but Gehazi had not refused them in his heart. He coveted what Elisha had declined, and what began as a desire soon became a pursuit. He lied to Naaman, took the silver and garments, hid them, and returned to his master.
Then Elisha said, “Whence comest thou, Gehazi?”
What a question!
Gehazi had gone somewhere, but he answered, “Thy servant went no whither.”
There speaks the voice of a guilty conscience trying to escape the truth.
He had gone after Naaman, but he would not admit it. He had sinned, but he would not confess it. He had something hidden beneath his roof, yet he stood before the prophet as though his hands were clean.
And is this not the way of sin?
First we desire what we should not desire. Then we pursue it. Then we conceal it. And finally, when questioned, we pretend that nothing has happened.
Oh, the deceitfulness of the human heart!
Gehazi’s sin did not begin when his feet carried him after Naaman. His feet merely followed where his heart had already gone. He saw the silver, his heart said, I want it. He saw the garments, his heart said, They should be mine.
Sin is not first in the hand, it is first in the heart.
What have you allowed into your imagination because you suppose that nobody can see it?
Remember, Christian, the hidden life is the real life. What a man is before God, when no human eye is upon him, is what he truly is.
Gehazi had lived near a prophet, witnessed miracles, and heard the word of God. Yet his heart had become a marketplace for covetousness.
The question is therefore not merely, “Where are you?”
It is:
“Where has your heart gone?”
And Gehazi teaches us something else. He saw the silver and the garments, but he did not see the leprosy. Sin is a master at hiding its wages.
It shows you the sweetness and conceals the bitterness. It puts the bait upon the hook and hides the hook. It promises a moment of pleasure and says nothing about the wound it will leave upon the conscience.
The devil shows you what you will gain.
He does not show you what you will become.
So hear the question again:
“Whence comest thou?”
Where did you go?
Where has your heart been travelling?
What have you been pursuing?
What have you been hiding?
He already sees it.
There is no darkness where God cannot see. There is no secret chamber into which His eye cannot enter. You may deceive a friend, a pastor, a spouse, or even yourself, but you cannot deceive God.
Yet there is mercy in the question.
God does not expose our sin because He needs to discover it. He exposes it so that we might confess it.
Therefore, do not answer God as Gehazi answered Elisha. Do not say, “I went no whither,” when you know very well where you have been.
Call sin what it is.
Bring it into the light.
Confess it without excuse.
Forsake it without negotiation.
And run, not merely from sin, but to Christ.
So hear the question again:
“Whence comest thou?”
Where did you go?
And if the honest answer is, “Lord, I have wandered,” then do not hide.
Come home.
PRAYER
Lord, You know me completely.
Search my heart and show me where I have wandered. Expose the desires I have hidden, the compromises I have excused, and the sins I have tried to conceal.
Deliver me from the deceitfulness of sin and from caring more about appearing righteous before men than being right before You.
Make Christ so precious to me that sin loses its attraction. Give me grace to confess quickly, repent sincerely, and walk in the light.
Keep my heart near You.

Read 2 Kings 5:20–27 again. Get alone with God today and ask:
“Lord, where has my heart gone?”
Then be still before Him.
Do not defend yourself. Do not soften the truth.
Name the thing. Confess the thing. Forsake the thing.
And take one concrete step today to put that sin out of your path.
