Matthew 5:13–16
KEY VERSE
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?”
Matthew 5:13, KJV
REFLECTION
Have you ever noticed how something so important can be present but make very little difference?
A lamp may be in a room, but if it is covered, its light cannot be seen.
Salt may be in the kitchen, but if it is never used, it cannot affect the food.
Jesus used these two ordinary things to describe something extraordinary about His followers.
He said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.”
Then He said, “Ye are the light of the world.”
Notice that Jesus did not say, “You should try to become salt and light.” He said, “Ye are.”
The question, therefore, is not simply whether we are Christians.
The question is whether our lives are making a difference where God has placed us.
Salt affects wherever it is. Light makes what is around it visible.
In the same way, our Christianity should not remain something that exists only inside the church, during Bible study, or when we are surrounded by other believers.
It should be visible in our homes, workplaces, schools, friendships, conversations, and everyday decisions.
Sometimes we think being a light means doing only something great that many people will notice. It is not usually so.
Even a Christian who refuses to lie when lying would be easier or forgives when revenge seems justified is shining.
A Christian who treats people with kindness when there is nothing to gain is also shining.
And most of the time, our witness is not what we say about Christ, but what people see Christ producing in us.
Jesus also gave a warning about salt that loses its savour. Salt that no longer affects anything has lost the very quality that makes it useful.
This gives us something to consider.
Has my Christianity begun to lose its influence on the way I live?
Can people see Christ in the way I speak?
In the way I handle money?
In the way I treat difficult people?
Jesus did not call us to hide from the world. He called us to shine in it.
Our lives are meant to point people beyond ourselves to God.
KEY TAKEAWAY
God has placed you where you are for a reason. Your life should influence the people around you and point them toward Christ.
PRAYER
Lord, help me to live as salt and light wherever You have placed me.
Let my words, decisions, character, and actions reflect Christ. May people see something in my life that causes them to glorify You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Today, ask yourself:
“Where has God placed me, and how can I make a difference there?”
Choose one person you interact with today and deliberately show them the character of Christ through an act of kindness, encouragement, honesty, or service.
Read Matthew 5:13β16 again and ask God to show you where your light needs to shine more brightly.
