“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23, KJV
Today is the first morning of a new month.
Before you ask God for fresh blessings, stop and consider an older one.
You are still here.
That may sound ordinary until you remember that many things tried to wear you down. There were prayers that tested your patience. Battles no one else knew about. Moments when your strength was almost gone.
Yet here you are.
Jeremiah did not write these words while everything was going well. He wrote them while looking at the ruins of Jerusalem. Even there, surrounded by sorrow, he found one thing that had not changed.
“The LORD’S mercies…”
Notice that he does not say God’s mercies are occasional. He says they are the reason we have not been consumed.
You have not carried yourself this far. His mercy carried you. His patience carried you. His grace carried you. Every breath you have taken has been another testimony that His compassion has not failed.
So do not enter this month as though everything depends upon your strength. Do not measure August by your ability. Measure it by His faithfulness.
Your strength may rise and fall. Your emotions may change. Your circumstances may shift without warning. But the faithfulness of God has never missed a single morning.
If His mercy was sufficient yesterday, it will not fail you today. And if He has faithfully brought you to the first day of this month, you may confidently trust Him with every day that follows.
Reflection Questions
- Where did I experience God’s mercy last month that I almost overlooked?
Which promise about God’s faithfulness do I need to carry into this new month?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing mercy. Thank You for carrying me through every moment that could have broken me. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own strength more than Your sustaining grace. As I begin this new month, help me to rest in Your faithfulness. Keep my heart steadfast, my eyes fixed on Christ, and my hands ready to obey You. May this month bring glory to Your name as I walk closely with You each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
