“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey…”
Romans 6:16, KJV
It can be uncomfortable to hear this truth: who you obey reveals your true Lord.
We often flatter God with our words. We tell Him sweet things. We sing songs of surrender. We even make bold promises that we will obey Him. But when the moment of obedience comes, we may be found doing the opposite.
This may not always be intentional. Yet it reveals something deeper than our words ever could. As Scripture says, “to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are.”
A young boy once saw a dog following two men as they walked down the street talking together. He couldn’t tell which man the dog belonged to, so he kept watching.
Eventually, they reached a junction where the two men parted ways. One went left, the other right.
Without hesitation, the dog followed the man who turned left.
Whose dog was it?
The answer became obvious at the point where the paths separated.
Our lives are much the same.
Every day we come to crossroads. We must choose whether to obey God or obey our sinful desires, our fears, the opinions of people, or the temptations of the devil.
It is at those moments that our true allegiance is revealed.
Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience is heaven’s love language. Every act of obedience says, “Lord, I trust You. I love You. I acknowledge Your right to rule my life.”
Like that dog at the junction, the direction we choose reveals whose voice we truly follow.
May our lives consistently point to Christ.
Reflection Questions
- When God’s command conflicts with your desires, whose voice do you usually follow?
If someone judged your Lord by your daily obedience, what conclusion would they reach?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times my actions have contradicted my words. Help me not only to confess You with my lips but also to honour You with my obedience. Teach me to love You by keeping Your commands, and let my life clearly reveal that Jesus Christ is my Lord. Amen.
