Your chest is tight, or your stomach is turning, or you have read the same line four times without taking it in. Anxiety rarely announces itself as a thought first. It arrives in the body, and the mind supplies reasons afterwards.
Here are 29 Bible verses about anxiety, all in the King James Version, grouped by theme, with a short thought on each and a way to use them at the end. They begin where anxiety actually begins, in the body, because Scripture does. Take one, not all of them.

Bible Verses About Anxiety in the Body
Scripture describes anxious people physically before it explains anything to them. The first lie anxiety tells is that a body reacting this way means your faith has failed.
1. Psalm 61:2
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Overwhelmed is the word you would have chosen yourself. David prays it from a distance, so the prayer works from wherever you start.
2. Psalm 31:9-10
Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly. For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
Eyes, belly, bones, strength. He itemises the body because that is where he feels it, and none of it is called a failure of faith.
3. 1 Kings 19:5-7
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
Elijah has just asked to die. What is sent to him is food and sleep, twice, before any word of correction. If you have not eaten or slept properly, start there tonight.
4. 2 Corinthians 1:8-9
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead.
Paul says he was pressed beyond what he could carry and despaired of living, and he gives the reason it happened: so they would trust God rather than themselves. An apostle reached that point and was not outside the faith for it.
Bible Verses About Talking Back to Your Own Soul
A recurring move in the Psalms is a man addressing himself, and telling his own mind something instead of only listening to it.
5. Psalm 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
A question first, then an instruction, both aimed at his own soul. Do the same with a mind that has run one direction all evening.
6. Psalm 73:26
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
The failing is admitted first. What he leans on is God’s strength, since his own is exactly what has run out.
7. Psalm 116:7
Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.
Rest is spoken of as a place you can return to, and the reason given is memory of what God has done. Anxiety erases that record, so say it aloud.
Bible Verses About Handing Anxiety Over
These verses do not ask you to feel differently. They ask you to do something specific with what you are carrying.
8. Philippians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
“Be careful” meant anxious in 1611, not cautious. Name the specific thing to God, and the peace promised stands guard over your mind while the situation carries on unresolved.
9. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
One reason is given for casting it: he careth for you. That is what makes the handing over safe.
10. Psalm 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
The promise attached is sustaining. God holds you up underneath the load, which is what you need for a weight that keeps coming back.
11. Psalm 55:16-17
As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
Three fixed times in a day he could not otherwise hold together. A rhythm you keep is worth more than a feeling you cannot summon.
12. Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Written to a church rather than to one person. Anxiety pushes you toward isolation, and the verse assumes people around you.
Bible Verses About Fear, and the Reason Not to
Scripture rarely says fear not on its own. It attaches a reason, and the reason is a fact about God rather than about your situation.
13. Isaiah 41:10
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Four promises follow the command: presence, strength, help, being held up. The command arrives with everything needed to obey it.
14. Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua is about to lead a nation into territory he has reason to dread. Courage is commanded, and the ground for it travels with him.
15. Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
He answers his own fear with two questions rather than reassurance. Asked honestly, they shrink what filled the room.
16. 2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Timothy is being steadied for ministry, and “sound mind” here means soundness of judgment rather than a mind free of anxious feeling. Even so, steadiness is listed among what God supplies.

Bible Verses About God Being Near the Anxious
The comfort offered is company in the valley rather than a shorter valley.
17. Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Through the valley, not around it, and the comfort named is company. A shepherd’s tools are for a sheep that strayed.
18. Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Refuge, strength, and help that is already here rather than on its way. Three things offered in one line, all of them present tense.
19. Psalm 34:4
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
The psalm’s heading places this after David escaped by feigning madness. He does not shrink the fear when he describes being delivered from it.
20. Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul lists everything he can think of, including things to come, which is where anxiety lives. None of it reaches what matters most.
21. Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Renewed strength is promised to those waiting. The list ends at walking without fainting, which is the honest goal on a hard week.
Bible Verses About Christ in the Storm
He met frightened people in person, and what he said to them is on record.
22. Mark 4:39-40
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
He was asleep in the boat before he stilled it. The question afterwards comes from someone who has just proved he can do something about the storm.
23. Matthew 6:25
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Jesus reasons from the larger gift to the smaller. If God gave the life, the food is a smaller matter than it feels at 3am.
24. Matthew 6:34
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
“Take no thought” here means do not be anxious, which is not the same as do not think. You are left free to plan tomorrow and forbidden to carry it tonight.
25. Matthew 11:28
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
He addresses people already worn out, so being at the end of yourself is what qualifies you to come.
Bible Verses About the Peace God Gives
These close the list because they are what the rest is moving toward.
26. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Whatever peace the world gives depends on circumstances cooperating. He said this hours before his arrest, which shows what his kind survives.
27. Isaiah 26:3
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Stayed means propped, held in place. Peace follows what the mind leans on, so you can be kept steady on a night you do not feel it.
28. Isaiah 30:15
For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
Strength is located in quietness, the opposite of how anxiety tells you to solve things. The verse ends by noting they refused, so it is a real choice.
29. Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
The mighty one in the middle of your situation is described as singing over you. Whatever you assume God feels about you tonight, the verse says otherwise.
How to Actually Use These Verses
Twenty-nine verses will not help you in the middle of an anxious hour. One will.
Take the verse that landed hardest and read it again slowly. Say it out loud, which is harder for an anxious mind to talk over. Then tell God the specific thing, by name, in your own words, as Philippians 4:6 instructs.
Then, if it is in your body, do what the angel did for Elijah before saying anything else. Eat something. Sleep if you can. That is not a distraction from the spiritual answer; it is the order God used with a prophet who wanted to die.
If anxiety has been keeping you from sleeping, eating, or functioning for weeks, treat that as worth a doctor’s time as well as prayer. Scripture and medical help are not competitors, and nothing in these verses asks you to choose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Anxiety a Sin?
Scripture never names anxiety as a sin, though Philippians 4:6 does give a command that can be disobeyed. Alongside it, Scripture records godly people in deep distress without rebuking them: Elijah asking to die in 1 Kings 19, David itemising his symptoms in Psalm 31, Paul despairing of life in 2 Corinthians 1:8. Hold both. Anxiety is something to bring to God, not evidence that you have failed him.
What Bible Verse Helps With Anxiety Attacks?
Psalm 61:2 fits the moment most closely, because it prays from inside the experience: “when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” For the physical side, Psalm 31:9-10 names the body directly, and 1 Kings 19:5-7 shows God feeding an exhausted man before speaking to him.
What Does “Be Careful for Nothing” Mean?
In 1611 English “careful” meant full of care, anxious. Philippians 4:6 is telling you to be anxious for nothing, not to be uncautious. The modern reader who takes it as “do not be careful” has it backwards, and the verse’s actual instruction follows immediately: bring the specific request to God.
Which Bible Character Struggled With Anxiety?
Elijah asked God to take his life in 1 Kings 19:4 and was answered with food and sleep. David describes his eyes, belly and bones failing in Psalm 31:9-10. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 1:8 that he was pressed beyond his strength and despaired of life. None of the three is rebuked for it.
Does God Promise to Take Anxiety Away?
Philippians 4:7 promises that the peace of God will keep your hearts and minds, which is a promise about being guarded rather than about the circumstance or the feeling ending. Scripture holds out God’s nearness in trouble more often than the removal of the trouble, which is what Psalm 23:4 says: he walks through the valley, and God is with him in it.
