You have probably already replayed it several times tonight. The conversation, the decision, the thing you said in 2019. The mind gets hold of something and will not put it down, and the harder you try to stop, the louder it gets.
Here are 28 Bible verses about overthinking, all in the King James Version, grouped by theme, with a short thought on each and a simple way to use them at the end. Some of them name what a racing mind feels like from the inside. Some tell you what to do with it. Read them slowly. You do not need all 28 tonight. You need one.

Bible Verses About the Mind That Will Not Stop
Scripture does not pretend this is unusual. Before it tells you what to do about a racing mind, it shows you people who had one, and it lets them say so in their own words.
1. Psalm 94:19
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Comfort arrives while the thoughts are still multiplying. Whatever God does for a crowded mind, he does not wait for it to empty first.
2. Psalm 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
His own soul is the one he addresses, asked why it is behaving this way, then told where to look. You can speak to your mind instead of only listening to it.
3. Psalm 77:6
I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
Here is a man awake, going back over everything, searching. Scripture puts that on the page without embarrassment, which means you can take a mind in that state to God as it is.
4. Proverbs 12:25
Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
Worry bends a person. What lifts them here comes from outside, one good word from somebody else. A reason to say the thing aloud to someone you trust instead of circling it alone.
Bible Verses About Taking Your Thoughts Captive
These are the verses that give the mind something to do. Not emptying it, which is impossible, but redirecting it toward what is true.
5. 2 Corinthians 10:5
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
Paul is demolishing arguments raised against the knowledge of God, so this reaches your 2am thoughts by extension rather than directly. It still hands you a posture: a thought can be taken hold of and answered back.
6. Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Paul expects a mind to be transformed, and gradually. Slower than you want tonight, and better news than a mind that has to be fixed by morning.
7. Colossians 3:2
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
You are told to put your attention somewhere, which means it can be put. Expect to do it again every time you notice where it has drifted.
8. Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
The first item on Paul’s list is whether the thing is true. Run the 2am version of your situation past that one test, and a good deal of it will not survive.
Bible Verses About Bringing It to God Instead
The alternative Scripture offers is not silence. It is speech, directed somewhere other than back at yourself.
9. Philippians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
“Be careful” meant anxious in 1611, not cautious. Paul’s answer is to tell God the specific thing, and the peace he promises stands guard over your mind while the situation carries on unresolved.
10. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
One reason is given for casting it: he careth for you. Who you are handing it to is what makes the handing over safe.
11. Psalm 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Cast is a throwing word, used of a weight too heavy to set down gently. What God undertakes in return is to hold you up underneath it.
12. Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
David stops examining himself and asks God to do it instead. There is a self-searching that only pulls the knot tighter, and this is the way out of it.
Bible Verses About Trusting What You Cannot Work Out
Some overthinking is an attempt to reach certainty that is not available. These verses set a limit and call it wisdom rather than laziness.
13. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Trust with all your heart, and stop resting the full load on conclusions you reached by yourself. Thinking is not the problem here. Carrying the outcome alone is.
14. Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
There are conclusions you will not reach by thinking harder, because God is not reasoning at your level. The matter is in better hands than the ones turning it over tonight.
15. Psalm 131:1-2
LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
David left alone what was too big for him, and the word he uses for the result is quieted. A weaned child has stopped crying for what it cannot have.
16. Matthew 6:27
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
Jesus asks what the worrying has actually produced. Put that question to the thought you have turned over forty times tonight, and answer it honestly.

Bible Verses About Tomorrow
A large share of overthinking is rehearsal for a day that has not arrived. Scripture keeps returning the mind to the day in front of it.
17. Matthew 6:34
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
“Take no thought” here means do not be anxious, which is not the same as do not think. Jesus leaves you free to plan tomorrow and forbids you to carry it tonight.
18. Matthew 6:25
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Jesus reasons from the larger gift down to the smaller. If God gave you the life, the meal is a smaller matter than it feels at midnight.
19. Lamentations 3:22-23
It is of the LORDβS mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
A man wrote this looking at a destroyed city. Mercy comes each morning as it is needed, which is exactly why tomorrow cannot be settled tonight. Tomorrow’s supply has not arrived yet.
20. Proverbs 16:3
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Hand over the work first, and settled thinking follows. Most of us reverse it and try to think our way calm before we will let go of anything.
Bible Verses About Overthinking at Night
The mind is loudest when the distractions stop. Scripture speaks to this directly, and these are the verses most often left out of lists on this subject.
21. Ecclesiastes 2:22-23
For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
“His heart taketh not rest in the night.” Someone wrote that long before you, and it was kept in Scripture rather than edited out. A mind that will not rest is no sign your faith has failed.
22. Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Late nights spent chewing over trouble are called empty here. Sleep is described as something God gives to those he loves, and it comes before the thinking is finished.
23. Psalm 4:8
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
He can sleep because someone else is keeping watch. Your staying awake is not what is holding tonight together.
24. Psalm 63:6
When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
He is awake in the night watches too, still thinking. What changed is what he is thinking about, and that is a more reachable aim at 3am than an empty mind.
Bible Verses About the Peace God Gives
These close the list because they are what the rest is moving toward.
25. Isaiah 26:3
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
A mind kept in perfect peace is one propped against God. Peace follows what it leans on, so you can be held steady on a night you do not feel steady.
26. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Whatever peace the world gives depends on circumstances going well. Jesus said this hours before he was arrested, which shows what his kind can survive.
27. Matthew 11:28-29
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
He invites you to come to a person, and he addresses those already carrying something heavy. Being worn out tonight is what qualifies you to accept.
28. 2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Paul is steadying a timid young minister, and the sound mind he names is steadiness of judgment rather than a quiet head. Even so, it sits in a list of what God gives, which puts it outside the things you must produce yourself.
How to Actually Use These Verses
Twenty-eight verses will not help you at 2am. One will.
Pick the one that landed hardest as you read, and do not move on to the others. Read it again slowly. Say it out loud, which is harder for a racing mind to talk over. Then pray it back to God in your own words, telling him plainly what you keep turning over.
When the loop starts again, and it will, you now have one true sentence to set against it. That is not a trick for switching the mind off. It is the difference between a mind circling on itself and a mind occupied with something true, which is what Psalm 63:6 describes.
If your thoughts have kept you from sleeping or functioning for weeks, treat that as worth a doctor’s time as well as prayer. Scripture and medical help are not competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Overthinking a Sin?
Scripture never uses the word, and careful thinking is repeatedly commended. Proverbs 18:15 praises the heart that gets knowledge, and 2 Timothy 2:7 tells Timothy to consider what is said. What Scripture does address is anxious rumination that crowds out trust, which is the concern behind Philippians 4:6 and Matthew 6:34. The line is not thinking hard; it is carrying what you were told to hand over.
What Bible Verse Helps With Racing Thoughts?
Psalm 94:19 is the closest fit, because it names the experience rather than only the cure: “In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.” For a mind racing at night, Psalm 4:8 and Psalm 127:2 speak directly to lying awake.
Why Do I Overthink at Night?
Scripture does not explain the mechanism, but it describes the experience plainly. Ecclesiastes 2:23 says of a troubled man that “his heart taketh not rest in the night,” and Psalm 77:6 records a mind making “diligent search” in the dark hours. The pattern is old enough to be written into the Bible.
What Does It Mean to Take Every Thought Captive?
In 2 Corinthians 10:5 Paul is describing the demolition of arguments raised against the knowledge of God, in a passage about spiritual warfare and his own ministry. Applied to an anxious mind, it means a thought can be examined and answered rather than simply believed, and Philippians 4:8 gives the test to apply: is it true?
Does the Bible Say to Stop Thinking?
No. When the KJV says “take no thought” in Matthew 6:25 and 6:34, the phrase means do not be anxious, not do not think. Christ is not forbidding planning or reflection. He is forbidding the carrying of tomorrow’s weight on today’s strength.
