Bible Reading

Exodus 13:17-22

Key Scripture

Exodus 13:21 (KJV)

“And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.”

Reflection

After Israel left Egypt, they were not left to figure out what came next. God went before them. By day and by night, God placed Himself before His people and showed them the way.

Israel therefore did not need to know the entire journey. They needed to follow the One who did.

We often reverse that order.

We make our plans, choose our direction, decide what we want, and sometimes only afterward ask God to come along with us. We want His blessing on our decisions more than His direction over them.

And when we become convinced that we know where we should go, God’s leading can begin to feel like an interruption.

Perhaps you have already decided what you will do about a relationship, a career, a move, a financial decision, or an opportunity. Perhaps you are not really asking God what He wants; you are asking Him to make what you want work.

That is how we get ahead of God.

It is possible to be so eager to reach a destination that we stop watching for the One who is leading us.

Israel had somewhere to go, but they did not determine the way. God did. Their responsibility was not to predict His next move but to follow His leading.

This does not mean sitting still until God gives us some extraordinary sign. Scripture has already given us much to obey. We can pray, seek wisdom, act responsibly, and make plans. But our plans must remain submitted to God rather than becoming something we expect Him to endorse.

Before you move, ensure that it is God leading and not your desires.

Before you force the door, ask whether God has opened it.

Before you insist on your way, ask whether you have actually surrendered it.

You do not have to run ahead to make your future happen. Follow the God who goes before you.

Today’s Challenge

Read Exodus 13:17-22 again and again until you have felt the weight of the passage. Pay particular attention to what God did before His people and how He led them.

Then ask yourself: Am I truly following God’s direction, or have I already chosen my way and simply asked God to bless it?

Prayer

Lord, keep me from running ahead of You and teach me to trust Your leading enough to follow wherever You go.
