Mark 10:46–52

REFLECTION
Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside when he heard the noise.
Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
He could not see Him, but he knew enough to know that this was a golden moment. So he cried out:
“Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.”
You would expect Jesus to stop immediately, right?
But He didn’t.
Jesus kept walking.
Bartimaeus could hear the crowd moving past him. He knew Jesus was getting farther away, so he cried again.
“Jesus, have mercy on me!”
And now the people around him spoke.
“Be quiet.”
They told him to hold his peace.
Perhaps they may have been thinking, “Oh, stop bothering Jesus.” Or, “You’re just a blind beggar. Know your place.” Maybe they thought Jesus had more important things to deal with.
But imagine being Bartimaeus.
The one person you believe can help you is passing by. You have cried out to Him, and He has not stopped. Then, while you are still trying to get His attention, the people around you and the people following Him are telling you to be quiet.
What would you do?
Would you stop?
You would most likely feel torn. On one hand, there is that hope: This is my chance. This is the person who can actually change my life, heal me. And on the other hand, there are the voices around you saying, “Quit embarrassing yourself,” or, “He doesn’t care.”
That mix could easily make someone feel small.
But if you have already been living in darkness, whether it is sin, an addiction, sickness, or a loved one who does not know Christ yet, like Bartimaeus, sometimes desperation becomes stronger than shame.
You keep calling because giving up isn’t an option.
And you cling to that fragile thread of hope.
For Bartimaeus, it is written, “But he cried the more a great deal.”
When Jesus is your only hope, you can’t afford to be quiet. The intensity of your cry reflects the depth of your hope in that person. Bartimaeus acts as if Jesus is his only chance, and in that moment, he refuses to let that chance slip away.
And then, after all that crying, all that waiting, all that apparent silence, Scripture says something almost startling:
“And Jesus stood still.”
You may not understand everything that is going on in your life and family today.
Even when it feels like heaven is silent, keep calling. Because the One you call on is worth waiting for.
Bartimaeus gives us an example.
Keep calling.
