Before you tell God what you need, take a moment to remember what He has already done.

TEXT

Philippians 4:6–7

KEY VERSE

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Philippians 4:6, KJV

REFLECTION

There are moments when we come before God with a long list of things we need.

We ask for provision, healing, direction, or protection. We ask God to change situations that have become difficult.

There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs before God. In fact, Scripture tells us to do so.

But Paul gives us an important instruction: “Let your requests be made known unto God,” with thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving changes the way we approach prayer.

When we pray only about what we need, our attention can become fixed on the problem. We see what is missing, what is uncertain, and what has not yet happened.

But thanksgiving causes us to remember what God has already done.

It reminds us that the God we are asking today is the same God who helped us yesterday.

Think about how easily we forget.

We can spend hours worrying about one unanswered prayer while overlooking dozens of prayers God has already answered or things that God is doing in our lives even without us having asked.

Paul was writing about prayer in the context of anxiety. His instruction was not, “Ignore your problems.”

It was to bring those problems to God with thanksgiving.

There is something powerful about saying, “Lord, I need You to intervene in this situation, but I also remember Your faithfulness. I may not know what You will do, but I know who You are.”

That kind of prayer shifts our focus from the size of the problem to the faithfulness of God.

And perhaps this is something we need to examine.

When you pray, do you spend more time telling God what you need or remembering what He has already done?

Before presenting your next request, pause and thank Him.

Thank Him for the prayers you remember being answered.

Thank Him for the ones He answered differently from what you expected.

Thank Him for His protection, His mercy, His provision, and simply for the privilege of coming before Him.

Thanksgiving may not immediately change the situation you are praying about, but it can change how you see that situation.

And Paul tells us what follows: “The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

KEY TAKEAWAY

When we remember God’s faithfulness while presenting our requests, we can pray with confidence instead of being consumed by anxiety.

PRAYER

Father, thank You for Your faithfulness to me.

Forgive me for the times I have become so focused on what I need that I have forgotten what You have already done.

Teach me to bring my requests before You with a thankful heart.

When I am anxious, remind me of Your past faithfulness. When I do not understand what You are doing, help me to remember who You are.

Let thanksgiving become a natural part of my prayers.

Thank You because You are good, faithful, and worthy of my trust.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Before making your requests to God today, spend a few minutes thanking Him for at least five things He has already done for you.

Then bring your present needs before Him.

Read Philippians 4:6–7 again and allow God’s promise of peace to settle your heart.

Start your morning with God.
