Discouragement may tell you that there is no way forward, but faith reminds you to turn to the Way Maker.

1 Samuel 30:1–8
KEY VERSE
“But David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.”
1 Samuel 30:6, KJV
REFLECTION
There can be seasons when everything may seem to go wrong at the same time.
You pray, but the situation does not change. You work hard, but the result is disappointing. You encourage others, yet you find yourself struggling to remain encouraged. Sometimes the weight becomes so much that you begin to wonder how much longer you can continue.
David experienced such a moment.
When he and his men returned to Ziklag, they found that the city had been burned and their families had been taken captive. The men who had followed David were so distressed that they began talking about stoning him.
David had every reason to be discouraged.
But Scripture says something remarkable:
“David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.”
David did not deny what had happened. He did not pretend that the loss was insignificant. He faced the reality of the situation, but he refused to allow his circumstances to have the final word.
Sometimes discouragement becomes dangerous when we begin to interpret our entire future through the pain of our present situation.
A difficult season can make us think, “Nothing will ever change.” But a difficult chapter is not the same thing as the end of the story.
Notice also where David found his strength.
He encouraged himself “in the LORD.”
His strength came from remembering who God was.
There are times when nobody else may be available to encourage you. You may have to remind yourself of God’s promises. You may have to pray when you do not feel like praying and to open your Bible when your emotions are telling you to give up.
What are you allowing to speak louder than God’s promises?
Your circumstances may be real, but God is still God.
David eventually sought God for direction, and God gave him an answer. The same God who strengthened him in the place of discouragement, will see you through whatever painful or discouraging season you maybe in right now
You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you mainly have to know and take encouragement in the One who holds tomorrow.
Overcoming discouragement begins with simply turning your eyes back to God.

PRAYER
Lord, when I become discouraged, help me to remember You.
When my circumstances overwhelm me, remind me of Your faithfulness. When I feel like giving up, give me strength to continue.
Teach me to find my encouragement in Your Word, Your promises, and Your presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Today, identify one thing that has been discouraging you.
Instead of repeatedly thinking about the problem, find a Scripture that reminds you of God’s faithfulness and spend time praying over it.
Read 1 Samuel 30:1β8 again and remember: David strengthened himself in the Lord before he moved forward.
