REFLECTION

Jesus went to His own country, and as He would do in other places, He went into the synagogue and began to teach. But the teaching was so powerful that the people were astonished. How could someone they knew so well speak with such wisdom and authority?

They knew His brothers, His sisters, and even His mother. They had watched Him grow up. Any ordinary person would be surprised to see someone they had known from childhood suddenly display a wisdom and power that was beyond the ordinary.

And so they asked, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?”

The very things they knew about Jesus became the reason they could not believe in Him.

The danger of familiarity is not simply that you know someone too well. The danger is that you begin to think you know all there is to know about them.

They thought they knew Him, while they knew Him not.

Is this not happening again in our generation and even in the Christian faith today?

So many of us come into the Christian faith in different ways. Some are born into Christian homes. Some grow up borrowing the faith of their parents and are brought to church from childhood. They know the songs, the Scriptures, the language, the routines, and everything that comes with Christianity.

But instead of getting to know Jesus intimately, they become familiar with Jesus.

Imagine someone trying to rebuke or correct you with Scripture, and instead of listening and humbly repenting, you complete the Scripture he is trying to quote to you.

You knew the Scripture.

But did you hear it?

How often have we become familiar with Jesus? With His name, with His servants, with His words, with everything about Him, until we have confused familiarity with intimacy.

Familiarity breeds contempt, while intimacy brings reverence.

There are some in the churches today who close every prayer with, “In Jesus’ name, Amen,” and yet no longer believe with conviction that the name of Jesus is powerful.

The Scripture says that they were offended at Jesus.

All of this hindered them, and the Bible says that Jesus could not do any mighty work there, except that He laid His hands upon a few sick people and healed them.

You may not need to wonder why the power of God is not being seen in some churches or in the life of someone who has been a Christian for many years.

Could familiarity be part of the reason?

This is why I am not so comfortable saying, “I have been a Christian for twenty years,” or, “I have known the Lord for so many years.” What does the number of years prove if we have stopped growing in our knowledge of Him?

Even the twenty-four elders in heaven have not become casual with God’s glory. They continue to fall before Him and cry, “Holy, holy, holy.”

They know Him, yet they are still amazed.

Let us replace familiarity with intimacy, and we will see more of the wonder and power of God in our lives and in our churches.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, keep us from becoming so familiar with You that we lose our reverence for You. Help us to know You more deeply, treasure Your Word, trust Your name, and continually desire more of You.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Read Mark 6:1-6 again today. Pay attention to what the people of Nazareth knew about Jesus and how that familiarity became a stumbling block to their faith.

Then ask yourself honestly: Have I become familiar with Jesus without becoming more intimate with Him?
