John 15:1–17
KEY VERSE
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

REFLECTION
A servant carries out instructions without necessarily being admitted into the reason behind them. A friend is brought into the counsel, told the purpose, made aware of what the master is doing and why.
Jesus marks a clear line between the two and tells His disciples that they have crossed it. “I have called you friends.”
James 2:23 calls Abraham “the Friend of God.” In Genesis 18:17, before revealing His plan concerning Sodom, God says, “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?”
This is what divine friendship looks like: God does not merely command; He reveals. He does not merely send us to work; He brings us into His purposes.
And notice who initiated this friendship.
The disciples did not negotiate their way into it. Jesus said, “I have called you friends.”
But there is something else we must not miss.
Being called a friend does not mean we are free from obedience. Jesus says in the very next verse, “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Friendship with Christ does not make His commands less important. It changes the heart from which we obey.
So, how do you relate to God?
Do you relate to Him primarily as an employee fulfilling requirements, trying to complete enough tasks to make Him pleased with you? Or as a taskmaster with a long list of rules and regulations that you must follow, or else He will throw you into the pit of fire? Do you see Him as a mean tyrant without feelings or emotions, who does not care about your peace, joy, or happiness? Or do you know Him as a Friend who has welcomed you into His purposes?
That difference changes everything about how we read Scripture, how we pray, and how we carry the life He has given us.
Read His Word today, not merely as a list of instructions to complete, but as the revealed counsel of the Friend who has brought you near.
You and I have friends, even senior friends, and we know how to relate to them fondly while also treating them with respect. God has called us His friends, and He means it.
The access is real. Use it.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling us Your friends. Teach us to know Your heart, understand Your purposes, and obey You not merely out of duty, but out of love for You.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Read John 15:1–17 slowly today. Pay special attention to verse 15, then ask yourself: Am I merely serving Christ, or am I actually walking with Him as a friend?
