1 Samuel 17:1–50
KEY VERSE
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.”
1 Samuel 17:45, KJV
We do not know what a new day will bring. We can plan for it, but we cannot see it beforehand. An unexpected bill, a disappointing report, or a problem we never anticipated can suddenly stand before us. As Jesus said, “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” David’s story teaches us how to meet such a day.
Goliath had intimidated Saul and the entire army of Israel. When David arrived, he heard the same threat and saw the same giant, yet he responded differently. He saw an uncircumcised Philistine defying “the armies of the living God.”
David remembered who Israel was. They were not merely soldiers facing a powerful enemy; they were the people who belonged to the living God.
Then David remembered what God had already done. The lion and the bear were smaller than Goliath, but David did not dismiss those victories because the present challenge was greater. He said:
“The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”
Then, standing before Goliath, he declared:
“I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts.”
David did not know exactly how the battle would end. But he knew who God was, whose he was, and what God had already done. What he remembered shaped what he said.
That is something we need every morning.
We wake up knowing very little about what the day will bring, but we already know much about the God who will be with us in it. We know whose we are. We know what He has done. We know He has been faithful.
So before the day’s problems begin speaking to you, speak first. Remember who you are in Christ. Recall the God who has carried you this far. Let those truths, not the giant, set the terms for how you face the day.
Speak from what you know, not merely from what you see.
You may not know what today will bring. But you know who holds you, who has carried you this far, and who will be with you today. Do not let the demands or “Goliaths” of the day intimidate you into speaking as though they are greater than your God.
PRAYER
Lord, before I face what I cannot see, remind me of what I already know about You. Help me remember who I am, whose I am, and how You have been faithful. Let my words today come from faith in You, not fear of what may happen. Amen.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Read 1 Samuel 17:32–47.
Before you begin your day, name one way God has been faithful to you in the past and one truth Scripture says about who you are in Him. Speak both aloud, then carry them with you when today’s “giant” begins to speak.
KEY TAKEAWAY
You may not know what today will bring, but you know who your God is. Let that shape what you say and how you face the day.
