One of the verses that has deeply helped my heart is this:
“Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.”
Psalm 149:2, KJV
Until a believer learns this kind of joy, he may only be happy when things are going well, when expectations are met, and when life feels pleasant. But when things go the other way, that joy may quickly disappear.
But this verse gives us a better foundation.
It says, “Let Israel rejoice in him that made him.” It does not first say, “Let Israel rejoice because they have plenty of corn,” or “because they have gold and silver,” or “because they have conquered their enemies,” or “because all their expectations have been met.”
It says, rejoice in Him.
What a joyful thing it is to know that the God who is God all by Himself, faithful to the very end, made you. He created you, called you, separated you unto Himself, and brought you into His family. You are His, and He is yours. He is not only your Maker, He is your King.
Of course, this belongs truly to the one who has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.
As a child of God, you are not fatherless. You are not leaderless. You are not without a covering. The One who made you also reigns over you.
So this verse teaches us that true joy comes from knowing who God is.
God is our Maker, so our life has meaning.
God is our King, so our life has direction.
God is our God, so our joy has a strong foundation.
This made me personalize the verse in my own notes. I wrote my name beside it so that I could say:
“Let Joel rejoice in Him that made him.”
And you can do the same as a believer. You can say:
“I will not wait until everything is perfect before I rejoice. I will rejoice because the Lord made me, owns me, leads me, and reigns over my life.”
Dear believer, do not let your joy hang on things that can change in one moment. Let your joy rest in the God who does not change.
Today, lift your heart again and say:
“I will be joyful in my King.”
Reflection Questions
- Have I been placing my joy more in what God gives than in who God is?
Do I truly see God as my Maker, my King, and my God?
What situation is trying to steal my joy today, and how can I turn my heart back to the Lord?
Prayer
Father, thank You because You made me, called me, saved me, and brought me under Your loving rule. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my joy to depend only on my circumstances. Teach my heart to rejoice in You, not only in what You give. Today, I choose to rejoice in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
