Seventeen verses of names stand between you and the story you came to read. Most Bible readers skim them. Matthew put them first on purpose, and he expected you to read every one.
He is answering the question every Jewish reader would have asked before believing a word about Jesus, and he may be answering a question you are carrying too. Does a family line settle what God can do with a person?
These lessons from Matthew 1 come out of a chapter that holds a king’s adultery, a harlot from Jericho, a national collapse, and a carpenter who woke up and obeyed God without saying a word. The names are not filler. They are the receipt on a promise God made two thousand years earlier and never forgot.

Brief Summary of Matthew 1
Matthew opens the New Testament with the family record of Jesus Christ, traced from Abraham through David, through the kings of Judah, through the exile to Babylon, and down to Joseph, the husband of Mary. Four women appear in the list, and their histories are anything but respectable. The chapter then turns to Joseph, who discovers Mary is pregnant before their marriage and decides to end the betrothal without exposing her. An angel meets him in a dream, tells him the child is of the Holy Ghost, and gives the boy His name. Joseph wakes and obeys.

The first sentence of the New Testament reaches back across the whole Old Testament and picks up two threads. God had told Abraham that in his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed. God had told David that his throne would be established for ever. Then came kings, ruin, exile, and four hundred years with no prophet speaking at all.
Matthew’s answer to all that silence is a list of names. Every name is a link that held. God kept working through generations who never saw the outcome, in a line that looked ordinary to everyone living inside it.
Faithfulness like this is measured by one thing only: whether the God who spoke is the kind of God who forgets. Matthew’s opening verse says He is not, and he is willing to spend seventeen verses proving it before he tells you anything Jesus did.

The promise you are holding was not spoken into a vacuum. It came from the same God who kept His word to Abraham across two thousand years, then wrote the proof into a genealogy so that nobody could argue with it.
Lesson 2: When God’s Promise Looks Dead, It Is Still on Schedule (Matthew 1:17)
Matthew 1:17: “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.” (KJV)
You can read that verse in six seconds. Living it took roughly two thousand years, and the middle stretch ends in catastrophe.
The throne of David fell. Jerusalem burned. The people were marched off to Babylon, and the royal line that carried God’s promise became a family of captives in a foreign empire. Any honest observer in that generation would have said the promise had died with the kingdom.
It had not died. It was moving through the wreckage toward a manger, and the men and women carrying it had no idea that was what they were doing.
Waiting is where many believers lose heart, because a promise with no visible progress can feel like a promise God has forgotten. Matthew answers that with three sets of generations. God is not slack concerning his promise, as Peter later put it (2 Peter 3:9), even when the delay outlasts a lifetime and everything on the surface says otherwise.
Where has the waiting led you to conclude that God changed His mind? This chapter hands you fourteen generations of evidence to the contrary, and then fourteen more.
Lesson 3: Every Promise God Made Comes Together in One Person (Matthew 1:1)
Matthew 1:1: “…the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (KJV)
You are not asked to assemble your hope from a dozen scattered pieces. Matthew gathers the whole Old Testament into two titles and lays them on one child.
Son of Abraham reaches back to the promise that all nations of the earth would be blessed through his seed (Genesis 12:3). Son of David reaches back to the promise of a kingdom that would never end (2 Samuel 7:12-13). Paul later says the seed promised to Abraham was Christ (Galatians 3:16). Both promises land on the same person.
That is the shape of the whole Bible. God does not spread His answer across a crowd of figures and leave you to work out which one to trust. He gathers everything He ever said into His Son and hands Him to you whole.
Matthew places Christ under both titles before he reports a single thing Jesus said or did. The person comes before the works, and the person is enough.
Lesson 4: God Wrote Four Scandals Into the Family Tree of His Son (Matthew 1:3, 5, 6)
Matthew 1:3, 5, 6: “And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar… And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth… And David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias.” (KJV)
A Jewish genealogy owed no woman a mention. Matthew names four of them. Tamar, whose twins were conceived through deception and immorality. Rahab, a harlot inside a city under judgment. Ruth, a Moabite widow from a nation Israel had every reason to despise. And Bathsheba, named here by the husband David had killed.
Every one of them carried a history the world would have called disqualifying, and every one of them stands in the line of the Messiah. Matthew makes sure you cannot read past them.
Many readers notice that all four stood in situations the world called shameful, and they see Matthew preparing his audience for a young woman in Nazareth whose pregnancy nobody would understand. The text does not say that outright, so hold it as a reading rather than a ruling. What the text does say is that God put these names in writing.
Grace reached these women. Grace never pretended their stories were clean, and Scripture records both the sin and its cost with painful honesty before it records the mercy.

Let those four names sit in front of you the next time you decide that someone is too far for God to use.
Lesson 5: God Tells the Truth About Sin, Even in His Own Record (Matthew 1:6)
Matthew 1:6: “And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias.” (KJV)
David is the only man in the list given a title. He is also the only man in the list whose worst hour is written into the same sentence as his crown. Matthew could have written “David begat Solomon of Bathsheba” and no reader would have complained. Instead he names the husband David wronged, and he lets the sentence stand there in the official record of the King of kings.
God does not edit His files to protect His heroes. He tells the truth about them, and then He saves them anyway. David himself learned to live in that light, and Psalm 51 is the sound of a man who has stopped managing his reputation in front of God.
Hiding is exhausting, and it produces a thin, anxious faith. The God who wrote Uriah’s name into His own Son’s family tree is not waiting for a better version of you before He will deal with you honestly.
Lesson 6: A Christian Family Cannot Make You a Christian (Matthew 1:7-10)
Matthew 1:9-10: “…and Achaz begat Ezekias; And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias.” (KJV)
Do you assume that faith travels down a bloodline? Watch what happens to three generations in this list.
Hezekiah was one of Judah’s most God-fearing kings. His son Manasseh filled Jerusalem with innocent blood. Manasseh’s son Amon was worse than his father. Then came Josiah, who tore down the idols and read the law aloud to a nation that had forgotten it.
Matthew records all four names without a word of comment. The royal line runs on unbroken, but faith does not travel with the blood.
Maybe you grew up with parents who prayed over you every night. Maybe nobody in your house ever opened a Bible. Neither one settles anything at all, because the children of God are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, but of God (John 1:13).
Ask yourself where your standing with God actually rests. If it rests on something you inherited, it is resting on nothing.
Lesson 7: Your Family History Is Not Your Verdict (Matthew 1:11)
Matthew 1:11: “And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon.” (KJV)
You may carry a name in your family that you would rather not explain. A line marked by addiction, abandonment, violence, or a faith that nobody in the house ever had. It sits there in the background of everything, and it can start to feel like a verdict that was handed down before you were born.
Matthew’s list runs straight through idolatry, adultery, murder, and national disgrace, and it arrives at Christ without apology. Rahab’s son married a Moabite. Their grandson was David. The exiles who lost everything came home. God was not embarrassed by any of it.
Christ genuinely breaks the hold of the line you were born into. He does not do it by treating your family’s sin, or your own, as though it never mattered. He does it by saving His people from their sins, which means the sin is dealt with rather than excused.

The first believer in a family line stands in good company here. So does the reader who came out of a home that knew God and still had to come to Him alone, in the end, with nobody’s faith but their own.
Lesson 8: God Works Through People No One Remembers (Matthew 1:13-15)
Matthew 1:13-15: “And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob.” (KJV)
Your name will most likely never appear in a book. Neither did theirs, apart from this one list.
Read them again. Abiud. Eliakim. Azor. Sadoc. Achim. Eliud. Eleazar. Matthan. Scripture never mentions any of these men anywhere else. No miracle, no psalm, no recorded prayer, no famous battle, no last words worth writing down, no moment that a preacher has ever built a sermon on.
Yet the line to Christ ran straight through their houses. Ordinary men, in ordinary generations, working, marrying, raising children, dying, and the Saviour of the world came through them because they were there.
God’s work has never depended on the people history notices. It moves through the faithfulness of people whose names nobody keeps, in years nobody records, and He keeps that record Himself because no one else was ever going to.
Have you started measuring your usefulness to God by whether anyone is watching? These eight men have nothing to show for themselves but a place in the line that carried Christ to the world, and Matthew wrote every one of their names down.
Lesson 9: God Did Not Edit the Worst Chapter Out of the Story (Matthew 1:11-12)
Matthew 1:11-12: “…about the time they were carried away to Babylon. And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel.” (KJV)
We all know of families with a chapter that never gets told at weddings. Israel had one, and God wrote it into the record Himself.
The exile was the lowest moment in the nation’s life. The temple burned. The throne ended. The people were marched out of the land God had given them, and the prophets called it what it was: judgment. A careful writer could have left it out of a Messiah’s family record and no one would have missed it.
Matthew names it three times in seventeen verses. The catastrophe stays in the file, because God was working through the catastrophe rather than around it. Salathiel was born in Babylon. Zerubbabel led the people home. The line kept moving in the very place where it looked finished.
Nothing in your history is too broken to be part of what God is doing, and He does not build His work only on the parts of your story you have already tidied up. The Babylon years belong to Him too.
Lesson 10: God’s Plan Is Ordered Even When History Looks Like Chaos (Matthew 1:17)
Matthew 1:17: “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations…” (KJV)
Matthew reaches the end of the list and counts it out for the reader: three sets of fourteen. He arranged it that way on purpose. Comparing his list with the Old Testament records shows he left some names out, which was an accepted practice in ancient genealogies, where “begat” could mean “was the ancestor of” rather than “was the father of.”
Why fourteen? The chapter does not tell us. Many scholars point out that the Hebrew letters in David’s name add up to fourteen, and that reading is worth knowing, though Matthew never says it. What the text plainly shows is a man looking back over a thousand years of tangled history and finding a shape in it, because there was a shape to find.
Those centuries did not feel ordered to the people living through them. They lived in wars, corrupt kings, deportations, and ruin, and none of them could see the pattern from inside it.

Hold that when your own years feel like a pile of unconnected events. Order is not always visible from inside the list.
Lesson 11: The Chain Breaks Exactly Where It Has To (Matthew 1:16)
Matthew 1:16: “And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.” (KJV)
Verse after verse, the chapter says that one man begat another. The formula runs the whole length of the list, generation after generation, and then it reaches verse 16 and the wording changes.
Joseph is never said to have fathered Jesus. He is called the husband of Mary, and the child is born of her. The chain of fathers stops one link short of the Son, and Matthew tells you why in the verses that follow: the conception was of the Holy Ghost.
The grammar guards what verses 18 and 20 declare outright. It does not stand alone as the proof, but it shows how the record was written, because a single word out of place would have handed the enemies of the gospel an argument.
Every detail in this chapter is doing work. The Son of God entered a real human family, in a real human line, with a real human record, and He was not the product of it. That is the mystery Christians confess every time they say He was born of a virgin.
Lesson 12: God Was Already at Work Before Joseph Knew Anything (Matthew 1:18)
Matthew 1:18: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” (KJV)
You know something Joseph does not. Verse 18 tells the reader the truth about the pregnancy, and Joseph will not hear it until verse 20. For two whole verses you watch a good man agonise over a situation God was already holding, and he has no idea that heaven has already spoken about it.
That gap is the most human thing in the chapter. Joseph is doing his level best with the worst information he has ever been handed, and God is neither surprised nor hurried.
You have lived in that gap. The weeks when nothing makes sense, when the news is bad and God seems to have gone silent, feel like weeks when God has stepped away from the room. Matthew shows you what was actually happening in Joseph’s version of those days. The Holy Ghost was at work in the very thing that looked like the end of everything he had planned.
God’s silence and God’s absence are two different things, and only one of them is real.
What are you interpreting right now with half the facts, and filing under God’s indifference?
Lesson 13: Be Just and Be Kind (Matthew 1:19)
Matthew 1:19: “Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.” (KJV)
Jewish betrothal was not a modern engagement. It was legally binding. The Jewish Encyclopedia notes that the betrothed pair were regarded as husband and wife in every legal and religious sense except living together, and the bond could be broken only by a formal divorce. That is why Matthew can call Joseph her husband before the wedding has happened.
So Joseph held real power in this moment. The law stood behind him, the town would have stood behind him, and a public accusation would have destroyed Mary. He looked for the door that would cost her least.
Matthew calls him a just man, and the evidence he offers for that justice is mercy. The two are not pulling against each other in this verse. They are the same man, in the same decision, at the same time.

Think of the person you believe has wronged you. You may well be in the right, and the right may well be yours to press. How you carry it is the test of what kind of person you are becoming.
Lesson 14: God Comes to You While You Are Still Weighing It (Matthew 1:20)
Matthew 1:20: “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife.” (KJV)
When exactly does God speak? Joseph had not acted yet. He had also not walked away from it. He was turning the thing over in his mind, sleepless and undecided, and that is precisely where the angel found him.
God did not wait for Joseph to reach clarity on his own. He met a man in the middle of an honest and painful deliberation and gave him the piece he was missing, which was the one piece no amount of thinking could have produced.
Some believers hold off praying until their thinking is sorted out, as though God only accepts finished decisions and tidy conclusions. Joseph’s dream tells a different story. The middle of the wrestle is where God found the man He had chosen to raise His Son, and He found him there while the wrestle was still going.
Bring Him the decision while it is still unresolved, before you have forced an answer out of it on your own.
Lesson 15: God Names You Before He Sends You (Matthew 1:20)
Matthew 1:20: “…Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.” (KJV)
The angel does not lead with the assignment. He leads with a title. Joseph, thou son of David.
A working man in a small northern town is addressed by the royal line Matthew has just listed him in, seventeen verses earlier. Only after that title does the command arrive.
The order carries weight. Joseph could never have taken this woman and this child as a village carpenter defending his own good name against the gossip. He could do it as a son of David receiving a King into his house.
God tells His people who they are before He tells them what to do, because what He asks is impossible on any other footing. Everything Christ calls you to rests on what He has already said about you in Him, rather than on your nerve, your track record, or how strong you feel on the morning He asks. Identity comes first, and obedience stands on it.
Lesson 16: Obey Before the Reasons to Be Afraid Go Away (Matthew 1:20)
Matthew 1:20: “…fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.” (KJV)
Notice what the angel never does. He does not remove one single reason Joseph had to be afraid.
The neighbours will still count the months. The gossip will still run through that town for years. Mary’s reputation, and now his own along with it, will still be shredded, and no angel is going to appear to the village elders and explain matters on Joseph’s behalf.
Everything that made the situation frightening was still waiting for him when he woke up. The angel told him not to fear, and gave him one reason: the child is of the Holy Ghost. That was all the assurance he got, and it was enough.
Fear does not usually leave before obedience does its work. Sometimes it never leaves at all, and God’s answer is not a change of circumstances but a revelation of what He is doing inside them.

Go and do the thing God has already made clear, while the fear is still standing right there beside you.
Lesson 17: Your Private Obedience Is Serving a Public Promise (Matthew 1:22)
Matthew 1:22: “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet.” (KJV)
Your obedience happens where nobody is looking, and so did his. A carpenter is deciding what to do about a pregnancy in a village of a few hundred people, with no audience, no platform, and nobody who would have called the decision historic.
Matthew looks at that scene and calls it the fulfilment of a word God spoke through Isaiah seven centuries earlier.
Joseph had no idea he was standing inside a prophecy. He was trying to do right by a woman he loved and could not understand, and God was fulfilling Scripture through a decision made in the dark.
God rarely announces the weight of a moment while you are living in it. The obedience nobody sees, in a choice nobody else would call important, may be carrying more than you will ever be told.
What would change about the decision in front of you today if you knew God was building something on it?
Lesson 18: Joseph Obeyed the Same Morning (Matthew 1:24)
Matthew 1:24: “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife.” (KJV)
He woke up and did it. No second dream requested. No bargaining, no delay, no week of careful consideration, no consultation with a friend who might have talked him out of it. Matthew leaves no gap between the revelation and the response, and that gap is where most of us live.
There is a form of disobedience that never actually says no. It says later. It asks for more confirmation about a thing God has already made plain, dresses the stalling up as wisdom, and calls it seeking the will of God.
Delayed obedience can drain the life out of a command until nothing is left of it but agreement. You can agree with a verse for twenty years and never once do it, and the agreement will feel like faith the whole time.
Joseph agreed with his feet, before breakfast, in front of a village that would talk about him for the rest of his life. That is what obedience looks like when it is real.
Lesson 19: You Do Not Have to Explain Yourself to Obey God (Matthew 1:24-25)
Matthew 1:24-25: “…and took unto him his wife: and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son.” (KJV)
You may never be able to explain the thing God has asked of you. Joseph stayed silent through this entire chapter, and he answered the angel, Mary, and every neighbour counting the months with his actions alone.
Part of what he does is a restraint nobody outside his house could have checked or verified. He kept it anyway, in private, where only God was watching.
Obedience that holds only while someone is watching is performance, and performance can usually find a reason to stop once the audience leaves. What Joseph did in the months before that birth had no witnesses at all.

The people around you may never understand the marriage you stayed in, the money you gave away, the door you refused to walk through, or the sin you finally left. Joseph’s silence was not weakness. He was a man who did not need his village to agree with him before he obeyed his God.
Lesson 20: Obedience Can Cost You Your Reputation and Still Be Right (Matthew 1:24-25)
Matthew 1:24-25: “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife… and he called his name JESUS.” (KJV)
The dream ended. The cost did not. Joseph took home a wife the town believed had betrayed him, and he raised a son the town would count as conceived out of wedlock.
Years later, people in that same town were still asking who this carpenter’s son thought He was (Matthew 13:55). The whispers outlived the obedience by decades, and Joseph never got the public correction that would have cleared his name.
We tend to expect that doing the right thing will be vindicated eventually, in front of the very people who doubted us. Sometimes God grants that. Often He does not, and the obedience is still right, and the reward is still coming, and the vindication is held until a better day than this one.
What has obeying God already cost you that has never been paid back? Joseph would tell you, if he spoke, that the Son he raised was worth every year of it.
Lesson 21: God Gives Fathers to Children Who Are Not Their Own (Matthew 1:21, 25)
Matthew 1:21, 25: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS… and he called his name JESUS.” (KJV)
You were brought into God’s family by adoption, not by blood, and this verse shows you how comfortable God is with that arrangement.
Naming a child was the father’s act. So when the angel tells Joseph what to call the boy, he is handing him a fatherhood he did not father, and Joseph takes it without hesitation. In naming Jesus, he claims Him as his own son before the law, before the synagogue, and before every neighbour who was counting the months.
Many believers have long understood this as the door through which Jesus receives His legal claim to David’s throne, since the royal line in this chapter runs through Joseph. Matthew does not spell that out, so hold it as a reading rather than a ruling from Scripture itself.
What the chapter says plainly is enough on its own. God chose a man who had no blood claim to this child to give Him His name, His home, His trade, and His protection through the years when Herod wanted Him dead.
Adoption is how God brought His own Son into a human household, and it is how He brought you into His.
Lesson 22: Jesus Saves You From Your Sins, Not From Your Circumstances (Matthew 1:21)
Matthew 1:21: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (KJV)
The mission was defined before the birth, and the angel put it in one line: he shall save his people from their sins. Israel wanted deliverance from Rome. Many of us come wanting relief from a hard season, a difficult marriage, an empty bank account. God named the thing He was sending His Son to deal with, and it was sin.
That answer has disappointed people from the very beginning. The crowds who wanted bread and a throne thinned out fast once He kept talking about sin and a cross, and readers today can be just as unsettled to find that the thing they most want fixed is not the thing He named.
It is also the only answer that reaches the actual problem. Circumstances can improve and leave you exactly the person you were, with the same anger, the same appetite, the same emptiness in a nicer house. He saves His people from their sins, not in them, and that is the deeper rescue.

Bring Him the sin you have been managing instead of confessing. His name was given for that, and He was born to deal with it.
Lesson 23: God With Us Is the Whole Point (Matthew 1:23)
