Luke 17:11–19
KEY VERSE
“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God.”
Luke 17:15, KJV
REFLECTION
Ten lepers cried out to Jesus from a distance, asking for mercy. Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests, and “as they went, they were cleansed.” They had to walk before they saw the answer.
Then one of them saw that he was healed and turned around.
The nine were doing what Jesus had told them to do. They were not ignoring His command. But after receiving His mercy, they kept walking. One man, however, stopped, turned back, glorified God with a loud voice, fell at Jesus’ feet, and thanked Him.
Luke makes sure we notice that he was a Samaritan. The other nine appear to have been Jews, yet the outsider was the one who returned to glorify God. We cannot know exactly why the nine did not return. Jesus simply asks, “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?”
That question still searches us.
Sometimes we are not openly rebellious. We are simply moving toward the next thing.
We prayed, God answered, and we kept going. The fever broke, and we returned to our routines. The money came, and our minds moved to the next bill. The job came through, and soon it was simply the job. The scan came back clear, and a few days later we were occupied with something else.
The answer became ordinary. The blessing became part of our routine. What once made us pray became something we hardly noticed anymore.
And perhaps that is one of the dangers of receiving God’s goodness: we can become so occupied with what He has given us that we forget to turn back toward Him.
The Samaritan did not.
He saw what had happened to him, and his feet changed direction. He returned to the One who had shown him mercy.
The nine kept walking toward what the miracle gave them. One turned back toward the One who gave it.
That is what gratitude does. It turns our attention from the gift back to the Giver.
Perhaps something God has done for you has already become so familiar that you no longer stop to thank Him for it. Perhaps you have been so busy walking into the answer that you have forgotten to turn around.
Jesus’ question is still there:
“Where are the nine?”
PRAYER
Father, keep me from becoming so occupied with Your gifts that I forget You, the Giver. Teach me to recognize Your mercy, turn back, and give You thanks. Amen.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Read Luke 17:11–19 again. Notice the movement: they went, they were cleansed, one saw, he turned back, he glorified God, and he fell at Jesus’ feet. Then sit with Jesus’ question: “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?”
Ask yourself: What has God done for me that I have become so accustomed to that I simply keep walking? Am I more occupied with what God has given me than with God Himself?
Before the day gets busy, turn back. Name one specific mercy you have received from God and thank Him for it.
KEY TAKEAWAY
God’s gifts should not make us forget the Giver; they should turn our hearts back to Him.
